Soccer is a popular sport which many of our students enjoy playing in their free time. In PE, we recognize that students come to this set of game skills from a variety of entry points. To make sure that all students can enjoy sufficient challenge without being overwhelmed, we use a number of activities which allow students to develop confidence in a few simple skills while experiencing the fun of game play. The video clip below shows a selection of activities in the primary grades. Notice the build up from simple kicking, to passing, to target kicking, to dynamic games with multiple balls traveling in many directions. The elementary PE program is taught by two full time teachers, both covering all grade levels. Our schedules tend to be pretty full. On a day 3 like today, my (Ms. Spelic's) schedule includes 2 sections of 5th Grade, followed by 2 sections each of 2nd, then 1st Grade. There's a longer break then I finish the day with one section of 3rd Grade. 5th Graders were leading their ideal PE lessons which included lots of active game time. 1st and 2nd graders practiced soccer dribbling. These boys also enjoyed a break from the action.
Below is a short video showing what the students completed on the Airtrack this year..... I think you will agree it is pretty impressive. Well done everyone . Coming back from a long break offers students of all ages opportunities to recognize how far they have come. In elementary PE we use these first few days to review our routines and allow students lots of social time to catch up with their friends in the process. It has been a pleasure to see students back in school healthy, happy and eager to tackle the next challenges.
