Stations in PE are like centers in the classroom: students spend a short time at each area and eventually rotate around to most or all of the activities. Mentioned above are just a few of the advantages of using Stations in early childhood classes. Pre-K students have been outstanding in PE and as a result enjoyed celebrating the first Awesome Gym Day of the school year. Below is a short video which captures the fun. We start the year in upper elementary with team building activities. Bridges is an old favorite. I challenged 4th & 5th graders to choose their equipment and the amounts. The results were very interesting. We are very lucky to be ES PE teachers, at times we get to see things that are awesome. Here is a 1st grader that blew our socks off at jump rope yesterday! Follow the Leader is simple yet essential game in elementary PE. First, students need to find a partner or group. Then, as a group they need to organize themselves into a line. Specific directions require good listening comprehension and group members all practice being cooperative followers as well as kind leaders. To top it all off, students rehearse fundamental locomotor movements cheerfully in a playful and challenging way. The video shows kindergarten children playing follow the leader in pairs and trips. 5th grade started team building games today, their first challenge was Bridges. They completed the task with only 3 pieces of equipment and certainly worked well together! Well done all.
Students at every level learn a variety of exercises which help develop muscle flexibility (stretching) and muscle strength and power (strengthening). Most classes include both elements and become student-led in time. The video shows a kindergarten class learning some stretches and older student playing a game with animal walks. This short video shows some of our start of the year activities. Examples here are from grades 3, 5 and 2 (in order of appearance😃). |
